Mama Bear

Ever grow into that growling, protective "mama bear" when one of your kids have been hurt? That is where I am right now. Teen #2 had her first volleyball game of the season last night. She played 3 rotations in 3 games. Which means she was in a total of about 5 minutes. She has been on varsity since her freshman year. Even if she still isn't a starter, you'd think she'd get to play more. It's not like everyone else on the team is 10 times better. She came home in tears and is threatening to quit because she can't stand being a bench warmer. She's already talked to the coach once about her playing time (even in scrimmages, the coach will pull her out) and what she needs to do. She practices hard, she plays year 'round, she's a good, solid, volleyball player. Needless to say, at this point I am ready to rip into the coach like a bear rips into salmon! Luckily, I respect teen #2's wishes, and at this point she doesn't want her dad and I to talk to the coach. Said she doesn't want us to be "those parents" who b***h at the coach any time their kid doesn't get their way. The hubby and I aren't those parents, we've stood back for many years and never questioned coaches decisions, but I'm telling you, it's getting pretty hard to bite my tongue these days!

Do You Know the Difference?

Today I shamefully drove through McD's to get lunch. I'm not a big french fry person, but with a little extra salt, I'll eat a few. So when I got up to the window, I asked the young lady for "a packet of salt". I watched her throw in something that looked much bigger than salt. I drove away and looked in the sack and what did I find? Ketchup! Do they even sound close to similar? Not in my opinion. And what's worse is the fact that ketchup makes me want to wretch! So needless to say, I ate fewer fries today than normal...I guess I really didn't need them afterall!

The Waiting Game

Today I took teen #2 to the radiologist for another x-ray on her right knee. The dr's office had called Friday requesting we take her there because they had better equipment than at their office. She said I could just stop by anytime they were open. This was news to them, as they had no request when we got there on what to x-ray. So we sat and waited. They called the drs office, then we waited some more until the dr called them back. She finally got the x-ray. We were there an hour. Fun.

Maggie, our 13 yr old dog had a vet appt. at 2:00. She hasn't been eating, drinking and can barely get up. They took her temp....105!!! They decided they needed x-rays of her chest. We played the waiting game again. Apparently they couldn't get the film to develope. They had to call in one of the ladies who apparently usually does the x-rays and re-do them. We waited quite awhile. I think I got out of there at 3:45. They also had to take blood samples, which was really hard to do since she was dehyrated. At this point they are saying she has "raging pneumonia" and gave us meds to give her. We've tried putting them in a pb sandwich, a hot dog and with yogurt. She only touched the yogurt, but not the pill. Guess the hubby is going to have to manually shove them down her throat.

So in the next day or two we should be hearing from both drs on further tests. Lets just hope there isn't anything terribly wrong with either teen #2 or the dog!

What Happened to July?

Here it is July 30th and I haven't written in over a month. We've been on the go...a lot. There was a trip to S.D., a visit from my sister and niece, volleyball camps, a trip to Vegas, classes at the gym, just to name a few. We celebrated out 20th anniversary. Now the kids and I are ready to head to IL for the last time this year for the annual golf tournament. Problem is, teen #2 and I haven't touched our golf clubs all summer! I'm hoping by time I get back from this trip I will start coming up with some good stuff to put in this blog. It would be more interesting that way.

Um...hello?

It has been almost a month since I last posted. Not that I get many readers or repliers (is that a word?), but I still feel bad about not posting.
It's been another wacky start to the summer, with not one, but 2 trips to IL already. Sadly, my uncle died unexpectedly which is why we had to take a 2nd trip.
Today I got more bad news. Fearing something was wrong with one of my dogs, after going 2 whole days with her eating nothing, I made her a vet appointment. She's been gagging lately and breathing hard, but when she quit eating, that's when I really knew something was wrong. She's a "garbage gut" and eats just about anything. They started with a chest x-ray. That's all they needed to do. She has lung cancer. And it's past the point of being treatable. We are keeping her home for the weekend. See if she'll eat anything. We are gone this weekend (again), but the oldest is staying here to house/dog sit. If she doesn't eat the entire weekend we'll have to make a decision I don't want to have to make. Obviously I don't want her to suffer. She's probably the best dog we've ever had. If she didn't shed, I'd say she's the perfect dog. So keep a good thought for Libbie...she deserves it.

My New Best Friend

Her name is Amy. She works at a TGI Friday's. I went there last week to have lunch with teen #1. Since it was Friday, I decided to have an adult beverage. When I placed my order, she told me they have to card anyone they believe to be under 30. Well, by all means, let me pull out my ID!!!! She looked at the date on my license like she was in shock and said "I would have never guessed". When she walked away, teen #1 said, "Doesn't she realize you're having lunch with your daughter?" Apparently not. Then she said "She probably just wants a good tip". That's okay, she made my day. And she got a good tip! :)
